Born and raised on the West coast of British Columbia, David completed the majority of his College and University studies in Eastern Canada. After completing his undergraduate degree with honours, he went on to receive his Master's degree with honours in theology, history and counselling from the University of Toronto. David was ordained an Anglican priest in 1974 and served in that capacity for 26 years.

Seeing the need for a sex-positive and non-judgmental atmosphere in the treatment of both individuals and couples, David felt it necessary to leave the church and serve his community as a secular counsellor, sex therapist and clinical sexologist. He started his own private practice in 2000, dedicating his energy, extensive counselling expertise and his research to counselling couples and individuals and to the diagnosis and treatment of sexual concerns and dysfunctions. This he did while working on his Ph.D. in human sexuality, which was conferred on him in June of 2005. Dr. David McKenzie specializes in couples therapy and sex therapy.

Throughout his career, David distinguished himself as a highly trained and skilled counselling therapist. Many couples and individuals in David's own clinical practice presented with a variety of sexual concerns and dysfunctions for which he was not equipped to handle. He also discovered that most professionals in either the medical or the counselling/psychological fields were inadequately equipped or skilled to provide the necessary therapeutic treatment for these sexual issues. His skills in individual and marriage counselling, along with requests from clients for sex advice, sex therapy and general marriage help, propelled David to seek out and study the science of sexology, in order to equip himself with the proper training to serve his clients' needs. Dr. David McKenzie is one of just three therapists in British Columbia, Canada who is board certified by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT), the pre-eminent board in all of North American in the field of human sexuality.

David holds his Master’s degree in theology and counselling from the University of Toronto and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in human sexuality from the Institute For Advanced Study of Human Sexuality , San Francisco, California. Dr. McKenzie is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the B.C. Association of Clinical Counsellors; is a board certified Sex Counselor by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists and a board certified Sexologist by the American College of Sexologists. David is also trained in the use of Emotionally Focused Therapy and over the course of his career has completed over 2000 hours of supervised professional practica. David has a broad background of training, experience and skilled expertise.

David's therapeutic approach is both unique and healing. As part of the counselling he then takes a thorough family-of-origin history, an individual sex profile, a relationship profile and a depression inventory to understand as fully as possible the entire spectrum of what is affecting each partner and the relationship. Dr. McKenzie encourages his client(s) to go deeply into themselves to discover what drives both themselves and their relationship. This is done not with the idea of living in one's past but rather of understasnding one's past and integrating and healing it.
